Sail the Wash programme

Work to extend the visitor pontoons in King’s Lynn is taking place as part of the Sail the Wash programme. Work will take place from August 2020 and throughout the Autumn.

About the programme

The Sail the Wash programme received Coastal Communities funding of £679,000 in March 2019. The project is designed to enhance existing and create more opportunities for leisure craft wanting to visit The Wash area and surrounding waterways. It’s being led by the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk, in partnership with Fenland District Council and Lincolnshire County Council.

The project includes:

  • practical improvements to the mooring and navigational infrastructure
  • the development of marketing and promotional materials to establish a Sail the Wash brand

It will attract additional tourism to the area which will support the local tourist economy and promote local business.

About the works

The work at the visitor pontoons in King’s Lynn will increase the number of leisure boats that can be moored in that location. This increased capacity will strengthen King’s Lynn’s position as a destination for UK and International maritime visitors.

Work is set to take around 8 weeks to complete (subject to weather and tides), and a Marine Mammal Observer will be on site throughout to ensure there is no harm to marine life. The Pontoons will be closed to vessels while the work is completed, but there will be no impact on the nearby road. We hope to be promoting the enhanced facility for the next season.

Additional pontoons will also be provided in Sutton Bridge and work on this element of the programme is expected to take place next year (2021).

New website

We’re currently working on an updated website. The relaunched website will feature up-to-date navigational and anchorage surveys. This will make it easier and safer for leisure boats to travel between port destinations. Also available on the new website will be:

  • online bookings
  • tide information
  • links to the main tourism businesses and attractions in the local areas

A membership scheme is also being developed for tourism attractions, hospitality businesses and other related businesses in the vicinity of The Wash. The scheme will enable their businesses to be promoted on the website and included in other promotional activities. Information on how businesses can get involved will be published in the near future on this website and through direct mail to businesses.
